This was a 2.1km up river swim on the world famous Henley Regatta Course, that incorporated a 5am start, and a simple a to b swim with no corners or loops to be done. Sounds perfect then. Only obstacle was that it was upriver, so light current to be swam against. I definitely underestimated the course with my aim of 31mins being optimistic in hindsight.
By the end of the race I felt like I swam an Ironman Distance, even with it being only 2.1km my arms were struggling by the end of it, and I knew that my last years fitness levels were still a long way off. But with it being a straight swim, it felt like I could just concentrate on my swimming and not worry to much about my sighting skills, and if you struggle on this part than this race is a great little open water test.
I did finish the Henley Classic Swim in 36mins, which is not bad, but not want I wanted. Yet it still feels strangely satisfying to have completed the course, not only having swam on the Henley Regatta Course at Pre-Dawn, but having ticked another race box.
