The Wiggle Wight Ferry Sportive is not a race, but more off a nice bike ride that includes the New Forrest twice, a ferry ride twice and a spin around the Isle of Wight. The Wiggle organized sportive is a fantastic idea, as it gives riders from every spectrum to experience a new course with sign posts along the way to mark the route, pot holes spray painted, albeit on not closed roads. But as I got a medal at the end I decided it was worthy to add to the Race Report Section.
Adding a few short single discipline races in between your A-Races is a good way to gauge your fitness levels, have a fun day out and gave me an opportunity to cycle with others, as the majority of my training is done on my own. My cycling buddy was the buddy from my Cape Argus Cycle Tour in South Africa a few months back, and the Isle of Wight seemed like a good challenge with a fair bit of climbing to be done. The aim was to do the epic route of 160km divided into 3 Sections, however due to a ferry hiccup at the start and subsequent delay, we decided to shorten the route to the standard route of around 100km, as my buddy needed to get a ferry later that day to France. The idea was to simply enjoy the route, push were we could and ease off when we wanted. With around 900m of climbing and final total of 121km it was a successful training ride with a nice medal at the end of the day. Lesson learned was that I need a longer stem on my bike, and that I need to do more hill training. Final time was 04:09:45.
